“People are talking about my captaincy but…”: Babar Azam On His Future As Skipper Of Pakistan Cricket Team

The ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 has Babar Azam at the centre of a storm. As the leader of the Pakistan team, the star batsman has been dealing with intense scrutiny due to Pakistan’s roller-coaster performance.

Speculations are ablaze that Babar might face the axe as the team’s captain post the tournament. Pakistan, starting with initial victories, saw their campaign falter with an unsettling four consecutive defeats, including an unprecedented loss against Afghanistan.

The Men in Green managed to break their losing streak, but the pressure on Babar hasn’t eased. Despite recent victories, their shaky position in the World Cup rankings threatens their advancement. While tying in points with New Zealand is feasible, their unfavourable net run rate may leave them short in the standings.

Calls for Babar’s dismissal as captain are echoing across various platforms. Media outlets are also buzzing with the likelihood of his replacement post-tournament, with former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed in line for the Test captaincy ahead of the Australia tour.

Yet, Babar Azam maintains his composure. Ahead of Pakistan’s crucial league game, he addressed the swirling speculations, expressing that captaincy pressure doesn’t faze him. The right-handed batsman emphasized his focus on the immediate game, brushing aside the chatter surrounding his leadership.

“I have been a captain of Pakistan for the last three years. I never felt the pressure of captaincy. There is no pressure of captaincy on me. People are talking about my captaincy, but I have not given below-average performance in the World Cup,” Babar Azam told the media.

He clarified that the fate of his captaincy will be discussed once the World Cup concludes, highlighting his current sole focus on the upcoming league match.

“PCB will discuss my captaincy once the World Cup ends and we go back to Pakistan because, for now, I am only focused on the remaining league match in this World Cup,” he added.
