Shreyas Iyer to miss IPL 2026? Check out the latest developments

Shreyas Iyer, the vice-captain of India, has been ruled out of competitive cricket due to a severe laceration injury that he sustained during the last ODI match in Sydney. As per a report by Dainik Jagran, Iyer will most probably not be able to return to the field till the IPL 2026.

Shreyas Iyer, who has been with the Kolkata Knight Riders, will be joining his new team, the Punjab Kings. The captain of the Knight Riders, who won the title, not only went on to lead the Punjab team to their second final in IPL’s history but also played the role of the most brilliant batsman for the team.

After Shubman Gill was named the captain in the format, Shreyas was promoted to be India’s vice-captain in ODIs. He made his first appearance as India’s vice-captain during the India tour of Australia.

Shreyas Iyer to miss IPL 2026?

Shreyas, who began his leadership career with the tour of the Aussies, was ruled out owing to a laceration injury he received while fielding in Sydney, when he pulled off an incredible catch to dismiss Alex Carey.

After the injury had sidelined him, Shreyas, who had been in Sydney for weeks, had reported for a two-month absence from the circuit.

Dainik Jagran’s Abhishek Tripathi has now stated that Shreyas will not be fit until the IPL 2026 edition. This is a significant setback for PBKS since their top batsman from the last season would start with very little match practice.

Shreyas ruled to be out of action for the upcoming series against South Africa and New Zealand

Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of participation in two of India’s series, one of which is the current series against South Africa.

Shreyas had already requested the BCCI to allow him to stay away from red-ball cricket because of his health problems and back injury.

A UCG Test has been performed on Shreyas’ injury, and he may have to go through scans that will allow him to start healing by the end of December or in the beginning of January. This would automatically make him miss the upcoming South African white ball series and the New Zealand home series later this year.

Who will be the Shreyas Iyer’s replacement in the Indian team?

Shreyas Iyer is a very important player in the Indian team. The middle-order batsman has been placed at no. 4 and has processed a lot of runs since World Cup 2023.

Rishabh Pant, who is possibly returning to the ODI team, might be one of the candidates to take Shreyas’ place. Another one is Dhruv Jurel, and besides them, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson are also competing for that one spot.
