Rohit Sharma set to equal this elusive record of Kane Williamson in the World Cup final

South Africa and India are ready to play against each other in the final of the T20 World Cup for the first time. This is the first time that South Africa, also known as the Proteas, is playing in the final of any World Cup. India is playing in their third International Cricket Council (ICC) final in a year. They played in the World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023 and then faced the same team in the ODI World Cup final on November 19. On June 29, the Indian team, will try to win their first ICC trophy in 11 years.

In the past two ICC championship finals, Rohit Sharma served as the captain. This Saturday (June 29), he will try to win the trophy again. Additionally, he will match New Zealand’s Kane Williamson’s achievement by becoming the second captain to lead his team in the finals of all ICC tournament formats.

In 2019, Williamson captained New Zealand in the One Day International (ODI) World Cup final. He then led them in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against India in 2021 and the T20 World Cup final against Australia later that same year in Dubai. The WTC began after the 2019 ODI World Cup, and the third edition of this long-form cricket competition is currently underway, with the final set for June next year.

In 2021, Williamson led his team to victory in the World Test Championship final against India, but they lost in the finals of the ODI and T20 World Cups to England and Australia, respectively. On the other hand, Rohit has already experienced losses in both the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup finals, both against Australia. It is still uncertain if he will be able to break India’s streak of not winning an ICC trophy since 2013.
