Rewriting History: Pathum Nissanka’s 210* Breaks Sanath Jayasuriya’s ODI Record

Pathum Nissanka and Sanath Jayasuriya

Srilankan opener Pathum Nissanka has been the talk of the town for his marvelous knock of 210*. Nissanka created history in Srilankan cricket by becoming the first player to score a double century in the ODI format.

Nissanka scored 210 runs on just 139 deliveries. The opener went on to become the highest individual scorer for Sri Lanka, breaking Sanath Jaisurya’s record of 189, which he scored against India in the year 2000.

Nissanka’s knock had powered Sri Lanka to a mammoth score of 381/3, their highest score against Afganistan in the 50-over format of the game.

Nissanka notched up his double ton by smashing a boundary against Fareed Ahmed. His innings included 20 boundaries and 8 sixes, and he registered the fifth highest individual Odi score as he surpassed Sachin Tendulkar,Glenn Maxwell, and Shubhman Gill.

Nissanka made his return to form as he scored his first century since July 2023. It took only 136 deliveries for him to register his double hundred. He registered the third fastest double century in the ODI century after Ishan Kishan, who holds the record for the fastest double ton in 126 balls, and Glenn Maxwell, who scored in 128 balls in the 2023 World Cup.
