In a surprising turn of events, experienced middle-order batter Fawad Alam has decided to step away from the Pakistan National Cricket Team and embark on a new cricketing journey in the United States of America. After a 15-year international career with Pakistan, Alam has opted to pursue opportunities in American cricket leagues, joining a growing list of Pakistani players who have made similar moves.
Fawad Alam’s international cricket journey began in 2007 when he made his ODI debut for Pakistan against Sri Lanka. Alam, a left-handed batter known for his unorthodox style, also made his Test debut against the same opposition in 2009. His final international appearance was in a Test match against Sri Lanka in Galle in July 2022.
As reported by Cricbuzz, the 37-year-old Fawad Alam has chosen to continue his cricketing career by playing as a “local” player for the Chicago Kingsmen in the Minor League Cricket T20. This tournament serves as a stepping stone to the recently concluded Major League Cricket (MLC), offering Alam a chance to showcase his skills in a new cricketing landscape.
Alam’s decision to pursue cricketing opportunities in the USA follows a trend among Pakistani players who have shifted to America for various reasons, including limited opportunities in the national team. Notable names like Sami Aslam, Hammad Azam, Saif Badar, and Mohammad Mohsin have previously made similar moves, seeking new avenues to continue their cricketing careers.
Fawad Alam’s international journey has been marked by moments of triumph and challenges. He made a remarkable century on his Test debut but faced inconsistency and was dropped from the national team after a few matches. His return to the team after an 11-year hiatus was marked by consistent performances in domestic cricket, including a century in New Zealand.

While Alam’s resurgence in international cricket saw successes, he also faced challenges. Struggles against Australia and Sri Lanka led to a dip in his form, prompting the team management to move away from him. Despite this, Alam’s contributions to the Pakistan National Cricket Team cannot be understated, with his inclusion in the victorious 2009 T20 World Cup squad, his five Test centuries, and an ODI century to his name.
