In the 56th match of Indian Premier League 2023 played between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals the star Indian leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal became the leading wicket-taker in IPL history by taking his 184th wicket in the tournament. He overtook Dwayne West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo who played for Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Gujarat Lions in this cash-rich league.
Chahal achieved this milestone in his first over by dismissing Kolkata Knight Riders captain Nitish Rana. Rana tried to hit a sweep shot that was caught by Shimron Hetmyer.
In the match against KKR, Chahal continued his impressive performance by taking four wickets for 25 runs in the quota of four overs. With this, his total wicket tally in the tournament becomes 187. After breaking the record, Chahal had a conversation with the broadcasters where he said,”I never even thought about it [becoming the highest wicket-taker] when I started playing the IPL.”
He further added,”I was with Mumbai Indians for three years [when I started] but my journey actually started in 2014. There have been a lot of ups and downs and I’ve enjoyed a lot too. I’ve learned from my downs, and what I’m today is because of my downfalls and [support from] my close ones.”
This special millstone from Chahal came in Eden Garden against KKR, back in 2013 the leg spinner made his debut against KKR only. For Mumbai Indians, he played only one match and then he moved to Royal Challengers Bangalore where he played most of his matches. For RCB, Chahal has got 139 wickets in 113 matches which is an incredible number and he is the highest wicket-taker for RCB in IPL history.
