Rahmanullah Gurbaz Becomes The Fastest Afghani Batter To Reach 1,000 ODI Runs

In cricket, records are etched in the annals of history to be cherished and celebrated. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, the talented Afghanistan wicketkeeper-batter, has recently left an indelible mark on the cricketing landscape. He has become the fastest Afghanistan cricketer to achieve the remarkable feat of scoring 1,000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODI). This achievement occurred during Afghanistan’s World Cup 2023 opener against Bangladesh in Dharamsala.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz embarked on his ODI journey in 2021, and in just two years, he has ascended to cricketing stardom. As he took the crease during the World Cup opener, he was a mere 42 runs away from reaching the coveted 1,000-run milestone. What followed was a display of his signature blend of technique and aggression, a testament to his cricketing prowess.

Gurbaz accomplished this milestone in a breathtaking 27 innings, surpassing the previous national record of 31 innings held by Rahmat Shah. His record-breaking achievement solidifies his place in the pantheon of Afghan cricketing legends.

In reaching the 1,000-run mark, Gurbaz joins an elite group of Afghan batters, becoming the 13th player from his country to achieve this distinction in ODI cricket. However, his exceptional average of over 38 sets him apart, which is the highest among Afghan players with 1,000 ODI runs. Since his debut, no other Afghan cricketer has amassed as many ODI runs as Gurbaz.

Notably, Rahmanullah Gurbaz is not just a batter but also a wicketkeeper. With this accomplishment, he proudly stands alongside the veteran Mohammad Shahzad as the second Afghan wicketkeeper-batter to reach the 1,000 ODI run landmark. His multifaceted skills make him an invaluable asset to the Afghan cricket team.

Gurbaz’s journey to cricketing glory is adorned with remarkable innings, none more so than his sensational 151-run knock against Pakistan earlier in the year. This marked his personal best and placed him among the elite few in the cricketing world. He became the second-fastest player worldwide to secure five ODI centuries, achieving this milestone in just 23 innings. This remarkable feat positions him alongside global cricketing stars like Pakistan’s Imam-ul-Haq and South Africa’s Quinton de Kock, who reached this landmark in 19 innings.

While Gurbaz continues to scale new heights, Afghanistan faces a challenging situation in the ongoing match against Bangladesh in Dharamsala. After 28 overs, Afghanistan found themselves at 126/6, following Bangladesh’s decision to field first.
