“No, I mean, yeah it was a used wicket, but…”: Kane Williamson On Pitch Change Controversy

As the cricketing world eagerly anticipated the Cricket World Cup 2023 semi-final clash between India and New Zealand, a sudden controversy took centre stage. Accusations were thrown at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), alleging a last-minute pitch change with the intent to favour the Indian team. The pre-match chatter added an unexpected layer of intrigue to an already high-stakes encounter.

In the post-match press conference, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson was questioned about the alleged pitch change. However, Williamson chose to downplay the controversy, acknowledging that the pitch was indeed a used one. Despite its previous use, he described it as a good surface, emphasizing that both teams had the opportunity to benefit from it.

“No, I mean, yeah, it was a used wicket, but a pretty good surface, really, as we saw. I mean, they got plenty out of it in the first half of the match. And conditions, I guess they change as they go under lights and things, and that’s what we’ve seen throughout this competition.”

Williamson’s response reflected a pragmatic approach, acknowledging the evolving conditions during the match and the adaptability required in high-stakes encounters.

When pressed further, Williamson expressed disappointment at not progressing further in the tournament but urged a broader perspective.

“So yeah, I mean, it’s disappointing to get to this stage and not go further, but also, at the same time, you sort of reflect on the seven weeks rather than a couple of small moments, and we lost to a better side.”

He credited India as the better team on the day and emphasized the need to appreciate the journey over specific moments of setback.

In a generous acknowledgement, Williamson hailed India as the best team in the world. He recognized their consistency and peak performance throughout the World Cup.

“They’re the best team in the world, and they’re all playing their best cricket, so that’s tough.”

He highlighted India’s flawless campaign and the challenge of facing a team operating at the pinnacle of their abilities. Despite the disappointment of the semi-final loss, Williamson expressed confidence in India’s upcoming performance in the final.

“And I think we see in cricket often it’s surrounded with failure and how you deal with it. The way they’ve played throughout this tournament has been incredible. They haven’t missed a beat, really, and to come into a semi-final, you go through your round-robin, and you try and get to the stage, and it starts again, but the way they came out and played, yeah, shows the mindset that they have, and the space that they’re in. And I’ve got no doubt they’ll go into that next match full of confidence.”

Kane Williamson’s measured response not only defused the pitch controversy but also highlighted the sportsmanship and respect for the opponent. The focus now shifts to the final, where India will aim to cap off their stellar campaign.
