Not Shaheen, Not Starc, Wasim Akram Picks Most In-Form Left-Arm Pacer In ODI World Cup 2023

In the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, the competition among left-arm pacers has been fierce. Former Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram recently shared his insight into the most in-form left-arm pacer in the tournament. The legendary cricketer made his choice during a podcast appearance, considering options like Marco Jansen, Mitchell Starc, and Shaheen Afridi.

Adam Gilchrist, during the Club Prairie Fire podcast, presented Wasim Akram with three options Marco Jansen, Mitchell Starc, and Shaheen Afridi. The discussion began with Gilchrist highlighting Jansen’s impressive performances in the current World Cup and mentioning Starc’s past success but recent struggles.

“Talking of a few players, a bloke who’s had a terrific tournament, Marco Jansen from South Africa. Just got me thinking of a guy that hasn’t hit the levels that he did in the previous two World Cups – Mitchell Starc. He was a previous leading wicket-taker in 2015 and 2019. “I want to know, you can only pick one currently, not with historic stats behind. You got to pick one out of Starc, Jansen or Shaheen Shah Afridi,” Gilchrist added.

As the discussion unfolded, Michael Vaughan suggested adding David Willey to the mix, only to be reminded that Willey has retired from ODIs. Gilchrist humorously dismissed Vaughan’s suggestion, adding a touch of banter to the conversation.

Gilchrist hilariously said: “He’s retired, mate. He got sacked. They said surplus to requirements. You’re our best player, but piss off. So, forget that little input. We don’t need any Poms infiltrating this discussion.”

After the banter, Wasim Akram revealed his choice for the most in-form left-arm pacer in the World Cup. Despite options like Mitchell Starc and Shaheen Afridi, Akram picked South Africa’s Marco Jansen. He described Jansen as a complete package, emphasizing his ability to take wickets with the new ball, maintain a consistent pace of 140-plus, possess height for extra bounce, and contribute with the bat in the middle order.

“If I have to pick one on present form, I’ll definitely definitely go for South Africa’s Jansen. It’s a complete package. He gets you wickets with the new ball; he’s got pace, 140-plus on a regular basis; he is tall, gets extra bounce, and then he can bat. He’s a very good batter at number seven, number eight, good power hitter, and he’s having a great tournament apart from one or two games maybe,” said Akram.

Jansen’s all-round abilities and his outstanding performance in the tournament were key factors in Akram’s decision.

In the ongoing World Cup, Marco Jansen has been a standout performer, picking up 17 wickets in 8 games and contributing with the bat by scoring 157 runs, including a top score of 75 not out. In comparison, Mitchell Starc has managed 10 wickets in 8 outings, while Shaheen Afridi has picked 18 wickets in 9 games.
