New Zealand has announced a 16-member squad for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka. The hosts got a thrilling win against Sri Lanka on the very last ball in the first Test played at Christchurch. In the absence of star players, wicketkeeper Tom Latham will be the captain of the team for the series.
Some senior players like Kane Williamson, Tim Southee, Devon Conway and Mitchell Santner will be representing their respective franchises in IPL 2023 which will eventually open the way for youngsters in the team.
This 16-member squad includes two newcomers for this ODI series, Chad Bowes and Ben Lister. Lister was one of those players who made his debut against India in T20, while Bowes play for Canterbury and after his impressive performance for the club in past months.
New Zealand coach Gary Stead talked about the team and said,”It’s always exciting as a coach to have new players in the environment and to have players putting their hands up to be selected again in a particular format. Chad has been impressive for a number of seasons at the top of the order for Canterbury as well as being an excellent fielder.”
He further added,”We are set to play 16 white-ball matches between now and the start of May so there will be a number of chances for players to test themselves in familiar and unfamiliar conditions.”
Wicketkeeper Tom Blundell who is performing brilliantly in the red ball team has been included in the white-ball series.
“Tom Blundell, in particular, is someone who we’ve been hugely impressed by in international cricket over the past 18 months as a leader in the Test team and then domestically with the Wellington Firebirds. It’s an exciting opportunity for Tom ahead of a big year of white-ball cricket,” Stead said.
