Injured Mohammad Shami is being replaced by young pacer Umran Malik in Indian squad for the Bangladesh series, informed BCCI on Saturday. Shami suffered a shoulder inury during a training session for the series. Owing to the injury he was ruled out of the Bangladesh series. He was not with the rest of team that travelled to Bangladesh on December 1. He is currently recovering at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.
Official statement by BCCI read, “Fast bowler Mohd. Shami sustained a shoulder injury during a training session in the lead up to the ODI series against Bangladesh. He is currently under the supervision of the BCCI Medical Team at the NCA, Bengaluru and will not be able to take part in the three-match series. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Umran Malik as Shami’s replacement.”
Umran Malik will join the team members who were in the New zealand tour. The players included Shikhar Dhawan, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant.
Umran will join the Indian pace attack which includes Chahar, Shardul, Mohammad Siraj and Kuldeep Sen in the ODIs against Bangladesh beginning from 4 December.
Though BCCI did not made clear the seriousness of Shami’s injury. He was making a comeback with the Bangladesh series after resting during the New Zealand tour.
If reports are to believed, Shami is also in doubt in coming out fit for the test series, starting from 14 December.
He was expected to lead the bowling unit in the ODIs and Test in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah.
Shami will be replaced in the test series as well if he doesn’t recover from the injury. Two tests against Bangladesh are crucial for India’s chances at the World Test Championship final.
