Former Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Amir has advocated for a change in leadership for the national cricket team following the disappointment in the 2023 World Cup. Babar Azam, the current captain, has faced criticism after the team failed to reach the semi-finals for the third consecutive edition.

Amir, in a recent World Cup special show on a local media channel, suggested a split captaincy approach to enhance Pakistan’s overall performance. For the T20 International format, especially with the T20 World Cup on the horizon, Amir recommended Imad Wasim as the captain. Wasim recently made a comeback to Pakistan’s shorter format against Afghanistan in April and is set to play a crucial role in the upcoming T20 matches and the Test series against Australia.

“In T20I format, with the T20 World Cup on the horizon, and a series of T20 matches and a Test series against Australia lined up before the mega-event, I pick Imad Wasim,” stated Mohammad Amir.

Amir proposed Shan Masood as the captain for the One Day International (ODI) format, emphasizing the need for a change in leadership to bring about a positive regime shift.

“In ODI, if you want to change regime, then Shan Masood can be a very good option,” Amir commented.

For Test cricket, Amir recommended the return of Sarfaraz Ahmed as the captain, with the suggestion to pair him with a young vice-captain to groom the next generation of leaders.

“If you want to prepare any youngster for Test captaincy, Sarfaraz still has 2 years left in cricket, so appoint him as the captain along with a youngster as vice-captain,” Amir concluded.

This proposed leadership restructuring comes ahead of Pakistan’s upcoming challenges, including a three-match Test series against Australia and a five-match T20I series during the tour. While Babar Azam is expected to lead in Tests, the white-ball series might see a change in captaincy to implement strategic improvements.
