Master Move To Preserve Test Cricket, Jay Shah Announces New Payment Scheme For Rohit, Kohli And Other Test Players

In the final game of the five-match Test series between India and England, the Indian team beat the visitors by an inning and 64 runs. With this, India lifted this series by 4-1. Meanwhile, The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) introduced the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ on Saturday, aiming to support the financial development of cricketers who give importance to Test cricket.

The program implements an additional incentive structure alongside the current match fee for Test matches.

While announcing the new payment scheme on his official X(Twitter) handle, Jay Shah wrote, “I am pleased to announce the initiation of the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ for Senior Men, a step aimed at providing financial growth and stability to our esteemed athletes. Commencing from the 2022-23 season, the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ will serve as an additional reward structure on top of the existing match fee for Test matches, set at INR 15 lakhs.”

The new program brings benefits to players regularly selected in India’s Test squad and playing XI. Cricketers who sustain their fitness and make themselves available for over 50% of India’s Test matches within a year will earn an additional ₹15 lakh for each Test as squad members. Those featuring in more than 50% of India’s Test matches in a year will receive ₹30 lakh per match.

The compensation rises for cricketers who are part of over 75% of India’s Test matches in a year. Those in the squad would receive ₹22.5 lakh per Test, while those in the playing XI would be entitled to ₹45 lakh per Test.

This move highlights the board’s commitment to preserving and valuing the traditional format of the game. Over the past few weeks, the board has been urging players to actively engage in Test cricket, both on the international and domestic stages. This initiative is in response to the growing tendency among players to prioritize the Indian Premier League (IPL) over red-ball cricket.
