BCCI has already shortlisted the names of 20 players who would make it into the final squad of the 2023 ODI World Cup. All these players would be rotated till the tournament. Meanwhile, the former Indian opener Krishnamachari Srikkanth has suggested how the BCCI should use the players in a better way to give them proper training and mindset for the upcoming ODI World Cup.
Srikkanth visioned that the selection should be entirely based on all-rounders and at the same time he proposed a significant role for the former star Indian batter Virat Kohli.
The ex-chairman of the selector had a conversation with the star sports where he said, “What role clarity do we need to give them? Look at Ishan Kishan for example, how he hits the ball, he has even scored a double century recently. Just tell these players to go out there and play your game, don’t restrict them. Just like Ishan Kishan, you need two or three more players who aren’t afraid to express themselves, that’s number one. All-rounders, batting all-rounders, and bowling all-rounders are required in this line-up. There should be a combination of these players on the team. And what about ODI cricket?”
He further added, “Just like Gautam Gambhir has played a major role of anchor in the past, the same way Virat Kohli will play that role this time around. He will help players like Ishan Kishan excel just as he got a century when Kishan got a double century. It’s all about freedom, giving your players the freedom, to do what you want, plays your game even if you get out, that’s the approach the team should have.”
Apart from it, Srikkanth talked about some key players who should be there in the Indian squad for the ODI World Cup. The former cricketer emphasized how Rishabh Pant can imitate Yusuf Pathan and can single-handedly win the game for India.
Srikkanth gave an example of Yuvraj Singh for the 2011 World Cup and said that Deepak Hooda can play the role that Yuvi did for India back in 2011. At the same time, he does not find any space for Shubman Gill and Shardul Thakur for the world cup.
