After much discussion about the ‘spirit of cricket’ in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, India’s Karun Nair showed why cricket is known as the ‘Gentleman’s Game.’ On Day 1 of the 5th Test against England at the Kennington Oval, Karun Nair appeared to decline a 4th run after England’s Chris Woakes hurt his shoulder trying to save a boundary. After three runs, Nair signaled to Washington Sundar not to go for the fourth.
Fans on social media praised Nair’s gesture, pointing out what the true ‘spirit of cricket’ means. While fielding, Woakes chased a ball from mid-off towards the boundary, and his hand seemed to slip on the wet outfield as he tried to keep himself steady. He landed hard on his left shoulder and was on the ground, holding it in pain. After some medical attention, he left the field with his sweater as a makeshift sling.
Woakes seems likely to miss the rest of the game. He is the only England pacer to have played in every game since the series began. But his time ended badly on Thursday.
It doesn’t look great, Gus Atkinson told BBC Sport after the first day. I will be surprised if he plays any part in the game.
Atkinson added: It’s the last game of the series, and it’s a shame when anyone gets hurt. We hope it’s not too bad. Whatever it is, he will get full support.
During the series, Woakes has been a poor bowler, with 11 wickets at an average of 52.18, and best numbers of 3/84.
Atkinson, playing his first Test of the series after a hamstring issue, said he is ready to push the limits if Woakes can’t play.
