“No reverse sweep No fancy scoops Just elegance” This is how one can define the innings of Joe Root that he played for England on the opening day of the Ranchi Test.
After getting scores of 29, 2, 5, 16, 18, and 7 in his last six innings for England, Joe Root was under the scanner for his poor run in the series.
Because of England’s bazball theory, Joe Root tried to impose himself on the opponents bowlers from the first delivery itself. To do so, he tried to play different shots like reverse scoop, reverse sweep, etc., which in the end caused him his wicket.
However, in the fourth test match, Root shunned the Bazball approach and came back to his original test batting style, which has earned him success over the years. He played one of the classic test innings, 106 of 226 deliveries, and hit just nine boundaries throughout the day.
Joe Root did not play a single sweep shot in his entire inning until he played the 115th delivery of his inning. Joe Root scored runs at a strike rate of 46.90, which is totally opposite to the approach that England’s batter is following in this series.
However, this anti-bazball innings came as a savior for England on day two, as the visitors were reduced to 112/5.
One of the most beautiful parts of Joe Root’s innings was that he was keen on taking singles rather than going for some flashy shots to hit boundaries.
Joe Root brought his best out when England needed him the most. It’s almost a series decider for the visitors as they are currently trailing by 2-1 in the five-match test series.
Joe Root’s innings were so special that they even earned praise from Brendon McCullum and skipper Ben Stokes as soon as he completed his century.
Ashwin’s Century: Rewriting Cricket History against England
But this inning was not at all a cake walk for Joe Root; he had his own struggle with the form and the expectations of the people. In this innings also, he was a couple of times hit on the pads, once by Siraj and once by Aakashdeep, but what sets him apart from others is his willingness to stay there on the crease in spite of everything.
One more thing can be said: if Bumrah had been there, things would have been different for Joe Root, but no one can take the amount of determination and dedication that he showed in this inning from him.
This is what Joe Root is: a perfectionist of the game. And after a test, cricket is a mixture of aggression and perseverance, and Joe Root knows that very well.
