In the 2024 T20 World Cup on June 6 in Dallas, Texas, USA captain Monank Patel praised his team’s performance that resulted in their crushing super-over victory against Pakistan. Monank praised the USA teamwork for pulling off this victory against all odds on Thursday. Monank got the Player of the Match award for his outstanding batting performance in his 50 off 38 ball knock.
A match that had many twists and turns from the beginning had to go to super-over, and the hosts prevailed in the highly anticipated Group A match with a considerable amount of dominance over the 2009 championship winners.
Asked to bat first, Pakistan had a nightmare start as they managed just 30 runs during the powerplay and quickly lost key players in Usman Khan, Fakhar Zaman, and Muhammad Rizwan. Although Babar Azam, the captain of Pakistan, managed to keep his team relatively stable at the wicket with a sluggish 44 off 43 ball knock, his impact on the game was minimal.
With their important partnership of 72 runs for the fourth wicket off of 8 overs, Babar and Shadab Khan enabled Pakistan to recover to some extent. After concluding his vital spell with remarkable figures of 4-0-30-3, USA’s Nosthush Kenjige caused the most damage to the Pakistani batting side.
Monak discussed the significance of the victory for the United States and how they would use it as motivation in the remaining stages of the competition during his remarks at the post-match press conference.
“It is a big achievement, beating Pakistan and that too playing (them) for the first time. It was a complete team effort. We won the toss and we made sure we utilised the conditions well. We did really well to keep them under 160. I am happy with my contribution and more happy that we won the game,” Monak said.
“We spoke about the top three contributing and happy that myself and Gous could do that. The plan was to play proper shots and he (Gous) took the pressure off me. Happy to get the two points. As a batter and player you want to show off in the big games and I am happy that my knock came in a winning cause.” Monak added.
