Irfan Pathan questions IPL fielding standards after PBKS vs CSK clash

In the latest IPL match, we witnessed quite an exciting showdown between the Punjab Kings and the Chennai Super Kings over in Mullanpur. It turned into a real spectacle for the fans as batsmen took center stage and cranked up an impressive 420 runs in the match. The standout performer on this day was Priyansh Arya, who made his debut and left everyone talking by scoring a century and ending up with 103 runs. Thanks to his fireworks with the bat, Punjab Kings set quite a hefty target of 220 runs, eventually securing the win against CSK by 18 runs.

But beyond Arya’s dazzling performance, the match was also marred by some pretty poor fielding, with both teams dropping a staggering eight catches between them. This led former cricketer Irfan Pathan to take to social media with a cheeky comment about the fielding standards in the IPL. He jokingly pointed out that even in the Legends League Cricket—where a lot of retired players play—people wouldn’t drop that many catches. He tweeted about how such levels of mishaps are rare there, clearly hinting that CSK and PBKS had some work to do.

Had CSK held onto some of those easy catches, they might have kept Punjab Kings under the 200-run mark, but alas, their fielding was lacking. Not only did PBKS flub a couple of catches, but they also allowed easy runs to slip away, which kept CSK’s hopes alive right until the final moments of the match.

Chennai’s captain Ruturaj Gaikwad expressed his frustration after the game, mentioning that their fielding has cost them dearly. He pointed out that they’ve struggled in this area over the last four games. “We’ve had chances, and the same players keep scoring runs because we’re dropping catches. Those few runs that they could’ve saved could have made all the difference,” he explained during the post-match chat.

On a more positive note for CSK, Gaikwad was pleased with how their batting unit performed against Punjab. He mentioned how well some of their top performers—Rachin and Conway—did at the start of their innings, taking advantage of the power play. “We did well in batting, there were a lot of positive signs. It felt like we were just a couple hits away from turning things around,” he added.

Right now, things are looking a bit grim for CSK, as they’ve only managed to snag one win this season, leaving them sitting near the bottom of the points table. Their next challenge is set against the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, coming up on April 11. Let’s see if they can turn things around!
