IPL fans had been counting down to November 15, eager to find out which players their teams would retain, who would be released and how the ongoing trade talks would shape their squads. Those decisions give supporters their first chance to judge their team’s strength, debate title chances with rival fans and assess what still needs fixing at the auction.
But there is now a change to that countdown. Fans will have to wait a little longer for the retention picture to become clear, although the delay is only two days.
The BCCI has extended the IPL retention deadline from November 15 to November 17, 2026. All 10 franchises now have the additional time to finalise and submit their retained and released player lists ahead of IPL 2027.
Why has the IPL retention deadline changed?
According to Cricbuzz, the BCCI informed franchises about the revised deadline on November 2. The report links the extension to the fifth India–New Zealand ODI, scheduled for November 15 at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.
The extra time could also help franchises complete outstanding squad discussions. However, there is no confirmation that pressure from any franchise or an unfinished trade prompted the change.
Retention decisions will show which areas teams want to rebuild and how much money they can take into the auction. The auction will then provide a clearer picture of how the completed squads compare on paper.
Hardik Pandya’s possible trade remains unresolved
Hardik Pandya’s future remains one of the biggest unanswered questions before the retention deadline. Reports have linked more than one franchise with the Mumbai Indians all-rounder, but no completed trade has been announced.
Kolkata Knight Riders have reportedly renewed their interest, while Chennai Super Kings have also been linked with a possible move. However, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has denied that trade discussions have taken place.
The possibility of a major move therefore remains open, but neither Hardik’s departure from Mumbai nor his next destination is confirmed. Other potential deals are also being discussed, so it would be premature to treat the remaining trade business as settled.
Which IPL 2027 trades have already been finalised?
Two completed player-swap deals have been reported so far, with Delhi Capitals involved in both.
| Player | Previous team | New team |
|---|---|---|
| Rishabh Pant | Lucknow Super Giants | Delhi Capitals |
| Kuldeep Yadav | Delhi Capitals | Lucknow Super Giants |
| T Natarajan | Delhi Capitals | Sunrisers Hyderabad |
| Zeeshan Ansari | Sunrisers Hyderabad | Delhi Capitals |
Pant and Kuldeep moved in a swap between Delhi and Lucknow. The other deal saw Natarajan return to Hyderabad, with Zeeshan moving to Delhi.
The retention deadline should also be distinguished from the trade-window deadline. Teams submitting their retention lists does not necessarily mean all trading activity ends that day.
When is the IPL 2027 auction?
The IPL 2027 mini-auction will take place on December 16, 2026, in Goa. Its date and venue remain unchanged despite the extension of the retention deadline.
Franchises will use the auction to fill the gaps left after their retention, release and trade decisions, with supporters then able to assess the balance of their teams ahead of the new season.
