IPL Makes Into The Guinness World Record, Jay Shah Accepts The Award For Record-Breaking Status

Earlier this year, on May 29, at the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) final between the Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) set a new Guinness World Record.

The game set a new record for the largest attendance at a T20 game ever anywhere in the world with a whopping 101,566 spectators in the storied venue. The largest cricket stadium in the world is the recently restored Ahmedabad stadium. While board secretary Jay Shah was among those to receive the top honor, BCCI posted on social media about the new record.

BCCI tweeted, “A proud moment for everyone as India creates the Guinness World Record. This one is for all our fans for their unmatched passion and unwavering support. Congratulations to @GCAMotera and @IPL.”

Jay Shah added to the celebratory message, “Extremely delighted & proud to receive the Guinness World Record for the largest attendance at a T20 match when 101,566 people witnessed the epic @IPLfinal at @GCAMotera’s magnificent Narendra Modi Stadium on 29 May 2022. A big thanks to our fans for making this possible!.”

Gujarat Titans (GT) defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) by 7 wickets in the 2022 IPL championship game. With a huge six, Shubman Gill scored the go-ahead runs, and David Miller and Hardik Pandya gave him excellent assistance in the 131-run total. Hardik, the team’s captain, had claimed three wickets with the ball, including major victims Sanju Samson and Jos Butter.

The 2022 IPL season saw the entire league stage take place in Mumbai to maintain a bio-bubble with the playoffs being held in Kolkata and Ahmedabad. The 2022 IPL eliminator and final were the first time since the Narendra Modi’s stadium opening in February 2021 that the ground was allowed to host a game at full capacity and with no COVID restrictions in place.
