India and Australia have recently finished the four-match Test series under Border-Gavaskar trophy. After this, both the teams will go for a three-match ODI series. The first ODI will be played on 17th March at Wankhede Stadium.
After the conclusion of the ODI series, the players will move to the 16th edition of Indian Premier League. Delhi Capitals is one such team who will miss the services of his regular captain Rishabh Pant and in absence of him the Australian superstar David Warner has got the captaincy duties while the left-handed Indian all-rounder Axar Patel has been appointed as the vice-captain.
Axar was one of those players who were totally brilliant in the Test series against Australia. Not only as a bowler but also as a batter, Axar has come a long way. Meanwhile, the former Australian captain Ricky Ponting who is also the head coach of Delhi capitals has talked about the progress and potential of Patel as a batter.
“I’ve known Axar for a long time and he was only a young boy in the squad at Mumbai when I first went there. I’ve known that there’s been a certain amount of batting skill there that really, apart from the last couple of years, he hadn’t really been showing at the IPL level or even at the international level,” Ponting told the ICC Review.
He further added,”There were a few little technique changes that we made with him. We just tried to open him up a little bit, which gave him a little bit more access to the ball. He’s always been a beautiful offside player. You know, his cover driving and cutting is as good as anyone’s. And if anything, he was just a little bit too blocked off to be able to score well on the leg side.”
Talking about the batting position of Axar Patel in IPL, Ponting said that no.6 is the ideal batting position for the Indian all-rounder.
