The 16th edition of the Indian Premier League will begin its 2023 season. This year’s tournament will be played in a home-away format which was interrupted due to Covid-19 for three years.
The credit for the success of the Indian Premier League goes to Indian cricket superstars such as MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah, as well as international players like Sunil Narine, David Warner, Chris Gayle, and Kieron Pollard. These players, along with others such as Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Hardik Pandya, Andre Russell, Lasith Malinga, DJ Bravo, and AB de Villiers have contributed significantly to the growth and popularity of the IPL.
The former Indian test captain Anil Kumble was recently asked to name the greatest player in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, he did not choose Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni, who are the most successful captains in the tournament, nor did he choose Virat Kohli, who has scored the most runs in the tournament. Instead, Kumble selected a former player of the Punjab Kings Chris Gayle as the greatest IPL player of all time.
While speaking to Jio Cinema, Kumble said, “There are plenty of them; it’s difficult to pick just one. I can certainly look back and say probably Chris Gayle, someone who is larger than life. The way he came across as a player! What he brought to RCB and the way he sorts of changed the whole powerplay and the power he brought to batting.”
Chris Gayle came to the IPL in 2009 where he started playing for KKR. The batter then went to Royal Challengers Bangalore and there he played the major part of his IPL career with some record-breaking innings. This Caribbean legend was last seen while playing for Punjab Kings. In all his IPL career, Gayle has 4965 runs under his name.
