Renowned Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his optimism about KL Rahul’s current batting prowess and its positive implications for India in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. India’s spectacular victory over Australia in their opening match has fueled excitement among fans and experts alike.
India’s victory over Australia at Chepauk, with a convincing six-wicket margin, left cricket enthusiasts in awe. It was a match that showcased India’s resilience and determination. The Men in Blue not only restricted Australia to a modest total of 199 runs but also comfortably chased it down with six wickets in hand and 52 balls to spare.
In an exclusive conversation with India Today, Sunil Gavaskar couldn’t help but applaud India’s remarkable comeback. He emphasized that their fightback was truly impressive and highlighted that this victory would significantly boost their confidence. It’s a clear warning to other teams in the tournament – India is a force to be reckoned with.
One of the standout performers in the match was KL Rahul. His unbeaten 97 runs off 115 balls, featuring eight boundaries and two sixes, was nothing short of exceptional. Gavaskar emphasized that Rahul’s innings in Chennai were flawless, and he didn’t put a foot wrong throughout his stay at the crease.
Gavaskar pointed out the importance of Rahul’s innings for India’s campaign. With Rahul holding the innings together at number 5, it provides stability to the batting lineup. His ability to anchor the innings and play sensibly is a valuable asset for the team.
“What India has shown is that they can recover even with backs on their wall. The fightback that we saw was the most impressive. It was a total all-rounder performance, a very good performance by India. The confidence level will go up. So other teams will have to watch out,” Gavaskar declared.
Gavaskar also praised Virat Kohli’s ability to thrive under pressure. He highlighted that Kohli relishes pressure situations and doesn’t settle for easy runs; in the context of a World Cup game, where every run counts, Kohli’s determination to make challenging runs is a significant asset.
“Virat’s experience was needed and we must not forget Rahul’s innings as well. Rahul scored 97 not out and did not put a foot wrong. Kohli had a bit of luck when that easy catch was dropped. So good to see the way he is playing. We’ve all known the ability and talent that he has. The way he’s batting right now really augers well for India for the rest of the tournament. You have someone coming in at number 5 who can hold the innings together,” Sunil Gavaskar emphasized.

While Kohli’s innings of 85 runs off 116 balls was impressive, Gavaskar expressed his surprise at Kohli falling short of a century. He remarked that if there’s one batter who knows how to get a hundred, it’s Kohli. Nevertheless, Kohli’s contribution to the match was invaluable.
“He relishes pressure and does not want easy runs. When you’re under pressure, all your runs are valuable. So relishing the pressure is one of the most important aspects. There’s no batter who doesn’t need a bit of luck at the start of the innings. But once that luck comes your way, you’ve got to cash in on it and he is very good at it. I’m actually surprised that he got out at 85 because if there’s one batter who knows how to get a hundred, it’s Kohli,” Gavaskar remarked.
After India’s top order crumbled, leaving the team at 2/3, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli came together to form a resilient partnership. Their 165-run stand was characterized by patience, sensibility, and exceptional shot selection. It was this partnership that played a pivotal role in India’s comfortable victory.
Following their triumphant victory over Australia in Chennai, India is gearing up to face Afghanistan next. The two teams are scheduled to clash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on October 11th. Additionally, all eyes are on the upcoming clash with Pakistan in Ahmedabad, a match that promises thrills and chills.
