Sanju Samson, the talented batter from Kerala, has received yet another significant opportunity as he finds himself included in the plans for the ODI World Cup. With his recent inclusion as a wicketkeeping option in the squad announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the upcoming ODI series against West Indies, Samson is poised to make an impact and further strengthen his case for a spot in the World Cup squad.
Former India coach Ravi Shastri has even drawn comparisons between Samson and Rohit Sharma, highlighting his immense potential. As the cricketing world turns its attention to Samson’s performance in the coming matches, it is an ideal time for the young batter to showcase his skills and secure his position among the top players in the sport.
July seems to hold a special significance for Samson, as he has made notable appearances in ODIs this month. His ODI debut came on July 23, 2021, against Sri Lanka, where he showcased his capabilities in his lone appearance of the series. Exactly a year later, during the tour of the West Indies, Samson made his second ODI appearance and played all the matches, including an impressive half-century in Port of Spain while chasing.
Despite missing a couple of matches earlier this year due to injury, Samson has made 11 appearances in ODIs, accumulating 330 runs at an average of 66. This consistent growth and contribution make him a valuable asset to the Indian team.
While acknowledging Samson as a “match winner,” Ravi Shastri believes that the young batter is yet to fully realize his potential. In an interview with The Week, Shastri expressed his hopes that Samson would fulfill his promise and end his career as one of the top players in the sport. Drawing a parallel with his emphasis on Rohit Sharma’s role as a regular Test player during his tenure as coach, Shastri believes that Samson possesses a similar potential for greatness. The coach’s words underline Samson’s expectations and emphasize his belief in his ability to make a significant impact.
“There is Sanju, who I believe is yet to realize his potential. He is a match-winner. There is something that is missing. I will be disappointed if he does not finish his career all guns blazing. It is like when I was the coach, and I would have been disappointed if Rohit Sharma had not played in my side as a regular Test player. Hence, his opening the batting. I feel similar with Sanju,” he said.

With Rishabh Pant’s uncertain return to the squad and KL Rahul nursing an injury, the upcoming ODI series against West Indies presents a golden opportunity for Samson to cement his place in the World Cup squad. Samson’s inclusion as a wicketkeeper-batter or a specialist batter, alongside the talented Ishan Kishan opening the order, adds further versatility and depth to India’s batting lineup.
The series against West Indies serves as a crucial phase for India’s World Cup preparations, making it an ideal platform for Samson to showcase his skills, consistency, and ability to perform under pressure.
