“I kept wondering, will I get another chance or not…” Suresh Raina Reflects on Nerve-Racking International Debut

Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina recently reminisced about his international debut and his nerves during the walk back to the dressing room after getting out. Raina debuted against Sri Lanka in 2005 and vividly remembered the long and anxious walk back to the dressing room following his dismissal.

Raina’s journey in international cricket began on a challenging note when he was dismissed on the first delivery he faced, falling victim to the renowned Sri Lankan bowler Muttiah Muralitharan’s LBW (leg before wicket) appeal. This early setback could have been demoralizing for a young cricketer making his debut.

However, Raina’s determination and perseverance enabled him to establish himself as a key player in the Indian cricket team under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. His consistent performances and team spirit were instrumental in the team’s success during that period.

Despite the disappointment of his debut dismissal, Raina became a reliable batsman and a valuable contributor to India’s limited-overs triumphs. His ability to finish games and his reliability as a middle-order batsman played a crucial role in India’s victories in major events like the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.

Recalling his debut in the JioCinema original ‘Home of Heroes,’ Raina described the long walk back to the dressing room and his thoughts of whether he would get another chance. However, the support and encouragement from senior teammates like MS Dhoni, Irfan Pathan, and Rahul Dravid helped him regain his confidence. They advised him not to lose heart and emphasized the importance of giving his best effort in the field.

“I made my debut against Sri Lanka in 2005 and got out LBW on the first ball facing Murali (Muralitharan). That walk to the dressing room was never ending and I kept wondering, will I get another chance? I put in the hard yards in the domestic circuit to reach where I was.” Raina recalled.

Raina particularly mentioned when he ran out Sri Lankan batsman Marvan Atapattu during their innings. This incident made him feel deserving of being a part of the Indian team, as it showcased the trust and support that the seniors had in him. Raina also highlighted his inspiration from seeing legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar sitting with them in the dressing room, which instilled a sense of pride and motivation to represent the Indian flag.

“I wouldn’t say king…” Centurion Batter Challenges Virat Kohli

“Mahi bhai, Irfan, and Rahul bhai told me to not lose heart for getting out on a duck and told me to give my best while fielding as they all had heard a lot about it. When Sri Lanka came to bat, I ran out of Atapattu, and after that, I felt I deserved to be part of the Indian team with every senior looking out for me. What was reassuring is to see Sachin Paaji sitting with us in the dressing room, which inspired youngsters like me to represent the Indian flag with more pride,” Suresh Raina added.

Suresh Raina’s journey in international cricket is a testament to his resilience and determination. Despite a challenging start, he overcame setbacks to become integral to the Indian team’s success. His reflections on his debut experience highlight the importance of support from teammates and the impact it can have on a player’s confidence and performance.
