Aakash Chopra, the renowned cricket commentator and former Indian cricketer, has attributed the magical touch of MS Dhoni as the key factor behind Chennai Super Kings (CSK) triumphant victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. In the final match in Ahmedabad on Monday, May 29, the Gujarat Titans (GT) set a challenging target of 214/4 after being asked to bat first.
However, CSK displayed their mettle by successfully chasing down the revised 15-over target of 171 runs with five wickets to spare, securing their fifth IPL title and joining the Mumbai Indians as the only five-time champions in the league’s history.
In a video shared on his YouTube channel while analyzing the game, Aakash Chopra highlighted that despite none of the CSK players topping the run-scoring or wicket-taking charts in the tournament, the team emerged as the deserving champions. He emphasized the pivotal role of MS Dhoni and the unique ability of the Chennai franchise to transform seemingly ordinary situations into gold. Chopra expressed his admiration by saying, “He can touch mud and convert it into gold.”
“Think about it, Orange Cap – Shubman Gill, the top three wicket-takers in the tournament are from Gujarat – Mohammad Shami, Mohit Sharma and Rashid Khan, but who has the trophy? That’s the beauty of MS Dhoni and the Chennai franchise. He can touch mud and convert it into gold,” said Aakash Chopra.
While discussing the individual performances, Chopra pointed out that CSK’s top run-scorer in IPL 2023, Devon Conway, accumulated 672 runs, which fell 218 runs short of the Orange Cap winner Shubman Gill’s tally of 890 runs. Similarly, the top three wicket-takers of the tournament, Mohammad Shami, Mohit Sharma, and Rashid Khan, all represented the Gujarat Titans. However, despite these statistics, CSK and MS Dhoni lifted the coveted trophy.

Chopra acknowledged the brilliance of the Gujarat Titans trio, with Mohammad Shami, Mohit Sharma, and Rashid Khan finishing as the highest wicket-takers in the tournament. However, he also highlighted the contributions of CSK’s Tushar Deshpande and Ravindra Jadeja, who were the most successful bowlers for the Chennai-based franchise with 21 and 20 wickets, respectively.
The analysis by Aakash Chopra underscores the exceptional leadership skills and strategic brilliance of MS Dhoni, along with the collective efforts of the CSK team, which resulted in their remarkable victory. It showcases the ability of Dhoni and the Chennai franchise to excel in challenging situations and turn them into moments of triumph. This achievement further solidifies MS Dhoni’s status as one of the most influential and successful captains in the history of the IPL, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations of cricketers to admire and aspire to.
