The world’s biggest cricket carnival is all set to unfold in less than a month’s time, as the 17th season of the IPL is all set to take center stage over international cricket on March 22.
However, ahead of the start of the tournament, one of the greatest Indian openers, Sunil Gavaskar, said that Mumbai Indians will enjoy it under the leadership of Hardik Pandaya and that it will allow Rohit Sharma to express himself more as a player.
With Hardik Pandya being the new skipper of the Mumbai Indians, it marks the end of the tenure of Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Mumbai Indians, under whose leadership franchise he achieved enormous success, winning five titles in 10 years.
In a sports event, Gavaskar said, “To allow Rohit to play purely as a batter… it has been a hectic season for him, first the World Cup, and now this series. This will give him the freedom to play without worrying about other players. My feeling is that it will work very well for Mumbai Indians. For Hardik to have someone like Rohit to turn to would be invaluable. Hardik will enjoy having Rohit as ‘captain’.”
Gavaskar further went on to say that having Rohit Sharma on his side, Hardik Pandya, will make him more evolved as a captain.
The Mumbai Indians will begin their IPL campaign on March 24 against the Gujarat Titans.
