The return of Kohli with his mighty century against Afghanistan in Asia Cup 2022 has been the most important add-on for India before the T20 World Cup 2022. The 71st century of Virat Kohli came after a long gap of almost 2 years and acted as the cherry on the cake for team India.
After seeing Kohli playing too aggressively at the top many fans and even former cricketers like Parthiv Patel have urged that the star Indian batter should open with Rohit Sharma in the upcoming T20 World Cup as well.
Now many former cricketers are divided over whether Kohli should open for India or not. The former Indian batter Gautam Gambhir is one such candidate to join the list of debates. Gambhir thinks that it should not be even a debate or matter of discussion, that Kohli should play at his fixed position which is no.3.
While talking to the star sports on the special episode of ‘Game Plan’, Gambhir said,” Don’t start this nonsense about him (Kohli) opening the batting. He can’t open the batting with KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma (available). I even said on air that there shouldn’t even be a debate about this. I will always be flexible about No. 3. If the openers bat out 10 overs, then I will have Suryakumar Yadav at No.3. If an early wicket falls then Kohli”.
Not only Gambhir, former Australian opener who was also present there at the show, said, “I like Virat at No. 3. He can manipulate the strike; his running is just off the charts. He can control the innings. He might be challenged with spin and he is a great fast bowler. I think the top four positions are locked.”
Not to forget, Kohli has opened the innings for his IPL team RCB so many times and the year 2016 where he smashed 4 centuries in a single season came as an opener only.
