Former Pakistan players slam Sunil Gavaskar for his recent statements regarding pahalgam attack and pakistan

A batch of ex-Pakistani cricketers has been quite upset about comments made by the celebrated Indian cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar, about Pakistan in the Asia Cup context. On a news show, Gavaskar said that considering the prevalent political environment, the chances of Pakistan joining the tournament co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka are slim. He noted that the BCCI tends to follow what the Indian government says, thus implying that the tensions between India and Pakistan could keep Pakistan out.

It has been more than a little tense, especially post the horrendous attack in Kashmir that claimed 26 lives. India has accused Pakistan of backing the attackers, scrapped the long-standing Indus Water Treaty, and threaten bigger actions.

Miandad expressed disbelief at these comments made by Gavaskar. “I can’t believe Sunny bhai said this,” he said to telecomasia.net, recalling their friendship throughout the years. “He’s always been a respectful guy who stays clear of politics.”

Former spinner Iqbal Qasim felt similarly, initially thinking Gavaskar’s comment was taken out of context: “Gavaskar is a respected figure loved on both sides. Politics shouldn’t mix with sports.”

Basit Ali expressed himself in no uncertain terms: He called the statement “stupid” and demanded proof before anybody levels an accusation. “Let the investigation finish. Cricket should rise above political fights,” he said.

Pakistan’s mushtaq Ahmed, former leg spinner, lamented about the age-old wisdom of Hazrat Ali (RA): “Never decide in anger that forces you to regret.” He emphasized Pakistan’s considerations into the cricketing domain and abhorred any politicization of the sport.

On the other hand, ODI skipper Mohammad Rizwan took a neutral position and upheld his view of long standing that cricket should be played between India and Pakistan. “No matter what happens politically, cricket should go on,” he said.
