India lost to England by 22 runs in the third Test of the five-match series at Lord’s. The game was closely contested, but India lost.
In the final innings, India was chasing 193 but was dismissed for 170. Although England set a small target, they recovered after Shubman Gill’s team had a bad start. Yashasvi Jaiswal was the first wicket to fall with only 5 runs on the board. Jofra Archer tested Jaiswal with a short ball outside off-stump. The left-hander tried to pull it on the leg side but got a top edge. Jamie Smith, the England wicketkeeper, caught the ball. It was only the seventh ball he faced.
Jaiswal’s wicket gave England hope, and they seized the chance. They bowled India out for 170 and won the game by a small amount.
Former England pacer Stuart Broad was surprised by Jaiswal’s shot selection. He did say Jaiswal is a player who usually scores runs. On the For The Love Of Cricket podcast, Broad said, “Jaiswal getting out was a poor shot. England felt like they were back in the game because he didn’t try to cut it over the off-side. He is the player who scores quickly.
When defending a low score, if you are bowling to a Sehwag or Warner, opening batters that can take the game away from you, and they score 60 quickly, the game is nearly done. But when Karun Nair came in, he plays each ball as it comes. England could then control the game, set attacking fields, and build pressure. I thought that was a big moment. England got an early breakthrough with Jaiswal’s dismissal.
