Indian captain Shubman Gill questioned England’s sportsmanship at a press conference before the Manchester Test, referencing a disagreement with Zak Crawley at Lord’s during the third Test. The issue was England’s alleged time-wasting.
Gill stated that even though teams want to use all the time they can at the end of the day, England delayed play unfairly by 90 seconds. Former England captain Nasser Hussain found Gill’s comments funny, thinking India would do the same.
Hussain and Dinesh Karthik talked about the incident. Hussain said he laughed at Gill’s comments about England’s sportsmanship. Karthik countered that India wouldn’t have the chance to delay the game by 90 seconds.
Gill clarified that England was 90 seconds late to the crease with seven minutes left in the day.
Hussain noted the umpires were worried about the light and Karthik thought it was smart to suggest concerns to the umpire, especially with a new ball coming and India’s past collapses.
Hussain said this made him laugh at Gill’s press conference, noting England did delay the game. And he added that every team does it, and India would do it, too.
Karthik said the difference is India wouldn’t be able to delay batting by 90 seconds, which was Gill’s issue.
