Delhi Capitals Purchased Franchise In MLC With Microsoft Co-founder

IPL franchise Delhi Capitals has joined hands with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to own and operate the Seattle franchise in Major League Cricket (MLC), a new T20 franchise league in the United States. This team is named the Seattle Orcas.

The Orca is a killer whale found in the seas around Seattle. The league is to be launched this July. The most successful IPL teams Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, are also associated with the new league.

The recent update indicates that four IPL teams will participate directly in the six-team tournament. KKR, already part of the tournament, has acquired the franchise based in Los Angeles. CSK will buy Texas, Mumbai Indians will be associated with New York, and Delhi Capitals with Seattle.

“GMR Group, co-owner of Delhi Capitals, will partner with Seattle Orcas to help build and operate a world-class cricket team,” the MLC informed media houses.

Seattle Orcas’ core investor group includes Nadella (Chairman and CEO of Microsoft), Soma Somasegar (Managing Director of Madrona Ventures), Sameer Bodas (Co-Founder and CEO, Icertis), Ashok Krishnamurthy (Managing Partner, Greatpoint Ventures) and Sanjay.

Kiran Kumar Grandi, co-owner of Delhi Capitals, said, “We see the US as the new frontier for the growth of cricket globally, and the Pacific Northwest is ideal for us to bring GMR Sports resources to the region and support the Seattle Orcas. This is an incredible opportunity to help build a team that will compete for championships.”

The final of the league is scheduled on 30 July. The league includes the Seattle Orcas among teams representing Texas, Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC, and San Francisco.
