CSK set to target this Lankan prodigy in the IPL auction 2026

There are two methods to excel at an auction. One is to bid according to the total amount of money, which the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are likely to do this season. The other and most ingenious method is to keep a reasonable budget and simultaneously scout for players all over the globe who could become complete superstars. This is the strategy that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are planning to follow for the IPL 2026 auction.

The five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions have listed an unknown Sri Lankan youngster by the name of Traveen Mathew in the players’ target shortlist before the mini auction scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi. The 21-year-old has been a key player in the U19 team of Sri Lanka and was also part of the squad for the recently held Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2025.

Traveen Mathew has also played for the Sharjah Warriors in the ILT20. Even though he has so far played only two matches for the franchise, the young player seems to have some talent if the Men in Yellow are so keen on getting him.

In the three matches that he played in the Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2025, Mathew took seven wickets, which is by no means low for an off-spinner. Among these wickets was a three-wicket haul against Hong Kong and the Pakistan Shaheens. When the IPL 2026 auction comes, the kid is going to get some high bidding from a lot of franchises, and CSK is going to be there watching him very closely.

Can CSK Reinforce Their Spin-bowling?

If a franchise has a remaining INR 43.40 Crore in its budget, what can’t it do? Among all the teams, CSK along with KKR has got the financial capacity to sign any player they want. But it’s not just about that. The teams will first have to think of the balance of the team, and only then will they come to a decision of what players they want to chase after.

Before the 19th edition of IPL, CSK have already released two of their highest-ranked players, Ravindra Jadeja, and Matheesha Pathirana. However, this has left Noor Ahmad as the only experienced spinner in the CSK squad, which is precisely the reason the team will have to hunt for another spin-bowling option. They have retained Shreyas Gopal who is a leg spinner but he may not necessarily find a spot in the final squad.

The players targeted by the Yellow brigade during the auction do not include Traveen Mathew as he is a long-term prospect. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find good finger spinners and a team that had once had the services of the legendary Ravichandran Ashwin would certainly need someone who could fill that void. Though Mathew may not be playing in the first XI, CSK management can very well turn him into a player for the future.

CSK, the IPL champions five times will have to make some adjustments in their bowling department. Besides the shortage of options in the spin bowling department, the team will also require some pace bowling resources. Nathan Ellis together with Khaleel Ahmed and Anshul Kamboj can take care of death and power-play respectively. The franchise, however, doesn’t have sufficient backups and this is a problem that will need to be addressed. Nonetheless, they have the financial muscle to explore.
