The Indian spinner Yuzvendra Chahal explained that Sanju Samson will hold himself responsible because he failed to deliver his best performance during the T20 World Cup 2026. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson once again failed to make an impact because he scored 24 runs during his fourth T20I match against New Zealand on Wednesday which took place at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. Samson achieved a strong start during his match but Mitchell Santner eliminated him from the game after he scored 24 runs through 15 batting attempts. Samson has yet to achieve a higher T20I score than 37 which he obtained during a match against South Africa in December 2022.
Ishan Kishan has shown strong performance at No. 3 which makes Samson’s T20 World Cup position uncertain because he scored only 40 runs during his last four New Zealand series matches. Chahal explained through his JioStar appearance that Sanju Samson’s failures to succeed should not be blamed on pressure because he possesses extensive experience. Ishan Kishan shows excellent performance therefore he needed four opportunities to prove himself according to the viewpoint of the speaker. Chahal explained that Samson will blame himself for his performance but the T20 World Cup should not cause people to panic because there remains time before the event.
Sanju Samson began his IPL career in 2013 which continued until 2023. He began his IPL career by playing as a middle-order batsman before switching to open the batting. After playing international cricket for 10-12 years, he should not use pressure as an excuse. He received four opportunities to play in this series. I can accept failure in one or two matches, but not in three or four. He understands that Ishan Kishan who serves as the backup batsman should now wait to bat at number three. Sanju will blame himself. Chahal explained to JioStar that he failed to convert his four chances into successful outcomes according to his own assessment of performance.
People should not worry about the T20 World Cup because it occurs at a distant date. The team needs to complete one more match against New Zealand. The team management needs to decide their next steps. The team should start Ishan Kishan as the opener and wicketkeeper if they believe Sanju cannot succeed as an opener and Ishan performs better at number three,” Chahal said.
Ishan Kishan missed the fourth India vs New Zealand T20I on Wednesday because of a minor injury, but it is uncertain if he will start in the fifth match of the series which could lead to Sanju Samson being dropped from the team. The final T20I of the series will occur on January 31 at Thiruvananthapuram.
