As India prepares for the final Test at The Oval, everyone is watching Shubman Gill, who might just make cricket history.
The India captain has a real chance to beat one of the oldest and most respected records in Test cricket. Don Bradman currently holds the record for the most runs in a single series. If Gill plays well and repeats his Edgbaston performance, he could enter the record books.
Bradman set the record in the 1930 Ashes series in England, scoring an amazing 974 runs in five Tests. This record has stood for almost a century, untouched by many great players. But now, Gill is close to beating the Australian legend.
So far, the 25-year-old has been in top form during the current tour of England. In the four Tests played, he has already scored 721 runs. To beat Bradman’s record, he needs another 253 runs at The Oval. It’s a tough but possible task, especially since he scored 430 runs in two innings in the second Test at Edgbaston.
India trails 2-1 in the series. After losing the first Test at Headingley, the team led by Gill made a strong comeback in the second game at Edgbaston. They fought hard in the third Test at Lord’s but lost by 22 runs. In the fourth Test at Old Trafford, they batted well in the third innings to force a draw.
The team hopes to finish the series strong. A win in the fifth Test at the Oval will help them tie the series, which will boost the players’ confidence, especially since this is the first Test series they have played without Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and R Ashwin.
