Breaking News: Sri Lankan Pacer Ruled Out Of T20 World Cup 2022, Team Adds 3 Backups

After getting a defeat against Australia in the second match of the Super 12 stage, Sri Lanka has now got another setback. Pace Binura Fernando who went off the field just after clinching five balls in his spell is now said to be ruled out from the T20 World Cup.

Sri Lankan Cricket Management has also got three backups to the current T20 World Cup squad.

Sri Lankan head coach, Chris Silverwood, gave an update on Binura Fernando’s most recent setback and discussed the team’s history of recurring injuries. The Englishman is hoping the Sri Lankan pacer will be able to play in their forthcoming match on October 29 against last year’s runner-up New Zealand.

He said, “Obviously we’re having a bit of bad luck around injuries at the moment, especially, as you said, in the pace stock. We’ll assess him (Fernando). The physio is working with him now and the doctor, so we’ll find out exactly the extent of the injury to start with and we’ll have to make some decisions from there… Yes, (it’s his) hamstring.”

In their second encounter in the Super 12 stage, Sri Lanka was humiliated by the defending champions Australia. The pace bowler Binura Fernando limped off the field just five deliveries into his spell, but that wasn’t the only concern for the Asian champions. The Sri Lankan Cricket Board quickly responded to the injury by opting to send three additional players as backups to the present team for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Danushka Gunathilaka (hamstring), Dushmantha Chameera (calf), and Dilshan Madushanka (quad) are just a few of the Islanders’ recent injury victims who have already been ruled out of this ICC tournament. Dasun Shanaka is concerned about Binura’s injuries because he doesn’t appear to have many other choices right now.

The SLC has decided to send Niroshan Dickwella, Asitha Fernando, and Matheesa Pathirana to Australia as backups to the existing team in case of any additional casualties due to the side’s numerous injuries. The statement was published on the SLC’s official Twitter account.

“SLC has decided to send 3 additional players to Australia to remain as backups in the event of any replacements. Niroshan Dickwella, Asitha Fernando, & Matheesa Pathirana will be sent along with Tim McCaskill, Head of the High-Performance Center of the SLC.”
