Before the second test in Delhi there is happy news for Indian cricket fans. After receiving a positive health report from the BCCI medical staff, Shreyas Iyer has been named to India’s squad for the second Test against Australia at Arun Jaitley Stadium.
The middle-order batsman missed the opening Test in Nagpur due to a back problem that also prevented him from playing in the home ODI series against New Zealand last month. Iyer then underwent rehabilitation at Bengaluru’s National Cricket Academy (NCA).
Iyer received treatment at the NCA for a swelling in his lower back after playing the two-Test series in Bangladesh in December. He was initially scheduled to depart from Bengaluru for Nagpur and join the Indian team’s training camp beginning on February 2 in preparation for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
However, the cricketer did not recover from the injury and as a result Suryakumar Yadav made his Test debut in Nagpur where India beat the Australians by an innings and 132 runs.
Iyer may replace Suryakumar Yadav in the playing XI in Delhi. Iyer has appeared in seven Test matches so far, scoring 624 runs with a strike rate of 65.13 and an average of 56.72. He excels against spin which makes him an important batter for India on turning surfaces. Iyer is one of four Indian batters with an average over 50 since the beginning of 2021 in Asia.
