Big Setback For ICC, Dominica Withdraws From Hosting 2024 T20 World Cup, Check The Reports

The excitement surrounding the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup took an unexpected turn as Dominica, one of the host countries, announced its withdrawal from hosting matches. With the event merely six months away, the government cited unpreparedness as the primary reason for stepping back from the responsibility of hosting a global cricketing tournament.

Dominica secured the opportunity to host World Cup matches after successfully submitting bids overseen by Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC). While several Caribbean countries participated in the bid process, Dominica emerged as a host, except for Jamaica, Grenada, and St Kitts & Nevis.

In an official statement, the Dominica government outlined the efforts made to upgrade venues, particularly the Windsor Park Sports Stadium and Benjamin’s Park. Despite tangible actions, the government acknowledged its inability to complete the necessary work within the stipulated timeframe before the tournament’s commencement.

“Several tangible actions were taken both at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium and at the Benjamin’s Park including the commencement of upgrading and enhancement of the practice and match venues, various assessments and the creation of additional pitches where necessary,” the Dominica government’s statement read.

Various initiatives were undertaken, including upgrading and enhancing practice and match venues, assessments, and the creation of additional pitches. However, the timelines provided by contractors indicated that the works could not be completed on time, leading to the decision not to host any matches in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

“However, the implementation timelines submitted by the various contractors revealed that it would not be possible to complete these works within the stipulated timeframe before the commencement of the tournament. As a result, a decision was taken not to host any of the matches in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 as it would not be prudent for the Government of Dominica to commit to hosting these games,” the statement continued.

Windsor Park in Dominica was initially selected for hosting one group stage match and a couple of Super 8 stage encounters. The hosting agreement, however, was contingent upon the venue meeting specified obligations outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

In response to Dominica’s decision, CWI Chief Executive Johnny Grave acknowledged the government’s dedication in preparing to host matches for the T20 World Cup. While recognizing their commitment, Grave expressed understanding of the reasons behind the decision and conveyed eagerness to continue collaborating with Dominica in the future.

CWI Chief Executive Johnny Grave replied, “We acknowledge the dedication of the Government of Dominica in preparing to host matches as a part of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. While recognizing their commitment, we note the reasons stated for the decision that has been made and understand the position. We look forward to continuing to work with the Government of Dominica and the Dominica Cricket Association to host international matches in the future.”

Despite the setback, there remains optimism about future collaborations between Cricket West Indies, the Dominica Cricket Association, and the Government of Dominica. The statement indicates a willingness to work together to host international matches in the future.

The upcoming tournament is scheduled to take place from June 4 to June 30 in the Caribbean Islands and the USA. A total of 20 teams will compete for the prestigious trophy, with Uganda securing the final qualification spot, marking their first appearance on this grand stage.
