Bangladesh Names New Captain For Asia Cup And 2023 ODI World Cup After Tamim Iqbal

Star Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been appointed as the new ODI Captain of the team replacing Tamim Iqbal. The all-rounder will now lead the team in the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 and ODI World Cup.

Due to back injury Tamim Iqbal was ruled out of the Asia Cup after which he submitted a resignation on August 3. The all-rounder has taken the leadership during a crucial period as they prepare for the Asia Cup and a home ODI series against New Zealand in September. After this, the team will head to India for the ODI World Cup which will start on October 5.

Shakib now holds the captaincy for all three formats in Bangladesh. He served for the third time as Test and T20I captain last year.

The change in leadership occurred due to Tamim’s decision to step down as Bangladesh’s ODI captain due to concerns about his fitness after he got a back injury. He will miss the Asia Cup starting on August 30 but Tamim aims to regain his fitness in time for the ODI series against New Zealand starting on September 21 and then for the 50-over World Cup.

Between 2009 to 2011, Shakib Al Hasan led Bangladesh in 49 ODI matches, he won 23 games out of it. Talking about his captaincy experience, the star all-rounder has served the team as captain in 19 Tests, 39 T20Is and 52 ODIs.
