As India’s cricket captain, Rohit Sharma, prepares to lead his team into the dual challenges of the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup, his legacy as a skipper hangs in the balance. The recent history of India’s ICC title drought has sparked discussions about leadership roles, prompting cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar to weigh in. Gavaskar’s perspective sheds light on the yardstick by which Rohit Sharma’s legacy will be measured.
Sunil Gavaskar eloquently encapsulates the essence of a cricket captain’s legacy. It is ultimately defined by the number of trophies won and the accumulation of victories. India’s recent inability to clinch an ICC title has prompted leadership changes, leading to Virat Kohli’s stint without a major ICC trophy. Gavaskar’s assertion that Rohit Sharma’s standing as a captain will be shaped by the trophies he brings home resonates with the expectations and aspirations of Indian cricket enthusiasts.
“At the end of the day you are judged by the number of trophies you have won, the numbers of wins you have. Winning these two tournaments will make him one of India’s greatest skippers,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
While the No. 4 batting position has emerged as a topic of discussion among cricket experts, Gavaskar highlights a different aspect that requires attention – the dearth of all-rounders in the squad. Drawing from the successes of previous World Cup-winning teams, Gavaskar underscores the importance of having cricketers who can contribute both with the bat and the ball. The presence of all-rounders adds versatility to the team’s gameplay and strategic flexibility.
“More than anything else, luck of the day is very important and if you look at the teams (in 1983, 1985 and 2011), they all had top class all-rounders. You had batters who could bowl 7-8-9 overs and bowlers who could bat down the order. That was the biggest plus of those teams. You see MSD’s team also: Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag could all bowl. It was the biggest plus. So, any team which has all-rounders (will hold the edge). You look at England who won last year’s T20 World Cup, look at the all-rounders they had. So, all-rounders are the key element,” said the 1983 World Cup-winning.
Gavaskar points to the historical significance of all-rounders in World Cup victories. He parallels past winning teams and their ability to have batters who could provide valuable overs and bowlers who could contribute with the bat. These players act as game-changers and provide a well-rounded approach, giving the team an edge in different match scenarios.

“We have got immense talent, (but) in the knockout stage you need a little bit of luck on the day. If you look at our situation in the knockout stages where we have lost, we had ill-luck just about every time. At the last World Cup (2019) we had a match (semifinal versus New Zealand) which stretched into the second day. If it had gone the proper full day we might have had a different story, because the next day it was seaming conditions and the New Zealand bowlers could bowl well. So, I think you need a little bit of luck on the day. I mean there are four-five very good teams, so you need luck on the day.” Gavaskar further added.
As the discussion extends to India’s preparedness for the World Cup, Gavaskar acknowledges the role of luck in cricket’s most crucial stages – the knockout rounds. He emphasizes that while talent is abundant, a touch of luck can make the difference between triumph and heartbreak. Gavaskar’s insight is grounded in examples such as the 2019 World Cup semifinal against New Zealand, which extended into a second day and altered the match dynamics due to changing pitch conditions.
Gavaskar’s mention of timing in cricket is profound. He underscores how the unfolding of events, such as the continuation of a match into the following day, can change outcomes. This dynamic aspect of the game reinforces the importance of seizing the right moments and harnessing talent and luck to craft a victorious journey.
