“I probably didn’t understand the magnitude of it but now…”: Virat Kohli On ODI World Cup Winning Dream

As the cricketing world reverberates with anticipation for the ICC World Cup 2023, to be hosted by India after several years, the spotlight inevitably turns to two of the nation’s cricketing legends Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. Tendulkar, revered as the “Master Blaster,” carried the hopes of a nation for 21 illustrious years, culminating in a crowning achievement with the 2011 World Cup triumph. On the other hand, Kohli, the modern-day talisman, stands on the precipice of greatness, aiming to etch his name in cricketing history with a second world title for India.

Tendulkar’s journey is intricately woven with the fabric of Indian cricket. As Kohli aptly put it back in 2011, the “Master Blaster” carried the weight of an entire nation’s hopes on his shoulders for over two decades. His legacy is enshrined in numerous records, feats, and iconic game contributions. The pinnacle of his career came in 2011, when India clinched the World Cup under his guiding influence, providing a triumphant culmination to his unparalleled journey.

Virat Kohli, often dubbed Tendulkar’s successor, is a force to be reckoned with in the cricketing arena. His remarkable consistency, insatiable hunger for runs, and unrelenting commitment have earned him a storied career and an overflowing trophy cabinet. As India prepares to host the 50-over World Cup again, Kohli’s sights are set on emulating the glory of 2011 and etching his legacy as a double World Cup-winning captain.

Having spent 15 years in international cricket, Kohli’s journey is a testament to his tenacity and love for the game. He recently shared his perspective on the significance of winning the 2011 World Cup. Despite being 23 years old at the time, Kohli acknowledges that the magnitude of that achievement wasn’t fully understood. However, with the passage of time and a wealth of experience, he grasped the depth of emotion that enveloped the senior players, particularly Tendulkar, who was bidding farewell to the World Cup stage.

As Kohli readies himself for the 2023 World Cup on home soil, he remains steadfast in his approach to the game. He highlighted his enduring passion for playing under challenging circumstances at a promotional event. The triumph of 2011, a memory still fresh in his mind, underscores his drive to succeed on the grandest stage.

“My career highlight is obviously winning the World Cup in 2011. I was 23 at the time, and I probably didn’t understand the magnitude of it. But now at 34, and has played many World Cups, which we haven’t been able to win, So, I understand the emotions of all the senior players (in 2011). All the more for Sachin Tendulkar, as it was his last World Cup. He had already played many World Cups by then and to win it in Mumbai, his hometown, was very special for him. I mean, it was stuff from dreams,” Kohli said.

Kohli reflects on the intense pressure that surrounded the 2011 World Cup campaign. While a relief, the absence of social media didn’t diminish the weight of expectations that players carried as they traversed airports and cricket grounds. The senior players, including Tendulkar, stood under the spotlight, handling immense pressure while steering the team towards the ultimate goal. The memories of that journey and the night of victory are a testament to the magic of unity and determination.

“I remember the amount of pressure there was on all the players when we were travelling, Thankfully, there was no social media back then. It would have been a nightmare, honestly. But through the airports, it was always just one thing we need to win the Cup. The senior players were always under the pump and had to handle all that pressure. It was just brilliant. And that night (after the WC win) in itself was something magical,” Kohli added.

As Kohli looks forward to the upcoming World Cup, his determination to recreate the magic of 2011 remains unwavering. The echoes of the past resonate in his pursuit of excellence as he aims to guide Rohit Sharma’s squad to a triumphant campaign on home soil. The dreams of a nation converge on this dynamic run-machine as he seeks to add another glorious chapter to India’s cricketing legacy.
