The search for the new head coach of the Indian cricket team has started, and news reports say that former captain Gautam Gambhir is one of the top choices for the position. Gambhir helped the Kolkata Knight Riders win the IPL in 2024.
It’s reported that the BCCI is talking to Gambhir as they look for someone to replace Rahul Dravid. Anil Kumble, a former India coach, complimented Gambhir but mentioned that coaching the national team is a very different and difficult task.
“You need someone who is confident and steady, and you want consistency,” Kumble said to ESPNCricinfo.
“Rahul has done an excellent job, and we hope he ends his career on a high note with the World Cup. Also, remember that some of the older players are nearing the end of their careers. You need players who can handle the change and make sure India still has good bowlers and batters. You choose carefully and make the change smoothly.”
“You need to be patient. He definitely has the skills. We’ve seen Gautam lead teams. He’s been a captain for India, his team, and Delhi. He has what it takes to do the job. But coaching the Indian team is a bit different, so give him time to adjust. If he takes the job, he’ll need to focus not only on the current team but also on the future of Indian cricket.”
Gambhir knows many of the older players in the Indian cricket team and also some younger ones like Rinku Singh. But Kumble thinks that knowing the players won’t be very important.
Kumble said, “Nowadays, you’ve been involved in the system somehow. Whether you’re a coach or a player, you’ve either played with them or worked with them in some way. It’s not really important. What matters is the person’s qualifications, not if the coach has played with the players before.”
He added, “It’s crucial to pick the right person based on what they can offer to the Indian team, and someone who has the respect and ability to manage different situations in the game. We need someone who isn’t scared to make tough decisions.”
