After the tour of the West Indies, India has two main events to look upon – Asia Cup and ODI World Cup. BCCI has already started filtering the players based on their performance. However, there are a few players for whom the board is still in dilemma to keep them in upcoming events or not.
According to the latest report, the newly appointed chief selector of Team India, Ajit Agarkar is all set to decide the fate of star Indian off-spinner R Ashwin and middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav for the ODI World Cup. Ashwin played his last ODI almost two years ago in South Africa whereas Suryakumar Yadav is still to prove his caliber in the 50-over format.
Ajit Agarkar to discuss the plan of these players with head coach Rahul Dravid and Skipper Rohit Sharma after the West Indies tour.
A BCCI official shared this information to InsideSport and said,”It’s wrong to say Ashwin is out of the World Cup already. It’s the selectors’ call. We all know how important Ashwin can be on Indian pitches. Ajit is meeting Rahul and Rohit during the Test match and will discuss the squads for Asia Cup and WC.”
However, it is very clear that Ashwin will now hardly play any ODI match. He was part of the team in the 2019 World Cup and after that he has played only two ODI games.
Suryakumar Yadav is one of the finest T20 batsmen but he has faced challenges in securing his spot in ODIs. Despite his exceptional T20 performances, he has struggled to solidify his position in the 50-over format, especially with the return of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. The World Cup is near and India will most probably keep Ishan Kishan or Sanju Samson in the squad as a cover for KL Rahul.

“Surya is definitely part of the plan but for now, he is only a backup. KL and Shreyas are definitely ahead. As Rishabh is unlikely to make it, an additional keeper in the 15-member squad is important. Agarkar will discuss that with Rohit and Rahul,” the official added.
