Is Abhishek Nayar the reason behind Andre Russell’s release from KKR, Shocking news inside

Andre Russell, the explosive hitter from the Caribbean, has been let go by the Kolkata Knight Riders prior to the IPL 2026 mini-auction. A former Indian cricketer has stated that the new KKR head coach, Abhishek Nayar, is responsible for Russell’s release.

Russell has been a standout player in the IPL and his long association with the league speaks for itself. He has been with KKR for 11 seasons, having joined the squad in 2014.

Russell gave up T20 internationals this year, and the 37-year-old has made 2600 runs, besides taking 122 wickets with the franchise during this period. He was voted KKR’s Most Valuable Player twice in 2015 and 2019.

“Just like every coach has the freedom to change things around, so do players”, says Mohammad Kaif about Abhishek Nayar’s influence.

Russell was reportedly a major factor in KKR’s success on the field. But after the Trinidadian’s departure, the former Indian batsman Mohammed Kaif expressed that Nayar’s appointment may not have altered the situation.

“Kolkata did not make a good decision by releasing Russell from the team. He was being paid 12 crores, which is not a big amount really for such a player. He is a unique talent. He was not delivering for some time, but in fact he was scoring later. The change in coaches does bring about changes but I think it was a significant decision,” flung out Mohammad Kaif.

Kaif went on to opine that the signing of Abhishek Nayar as head coach was the primary factor in the release of Andre Russell. Nayar might be looking to create a new team that fits his vision.

“You might argue that he was not at his best, but in my opinion, this is the kind of format where the experienced players are the ones to shine, especially in the IPL, and there are many instances to prove it. I think Abhishek Nayar is the direct answer to his exit. He wants to build his own team now. However, this was a shocking decision,” Kaif mentioned on his YouTube channel.

KKR probably won’t get a replacement for Russell in the mini-auction

Despite the player release of such a superstar as Andre Russell, Mohammad Kaif predicts that even with the big KKR’s budget, it won’t be possible to get a player of Russell’s level

“Russell’s quality and power are so great that even four players like Cameron Green cannot be a substitute for him. He has the ability to hit 100m sixes and he has turned around so many games for them from losing positions. He has earned that respect because of this skill. There are very few numbers seven such as he,” said Kaif.

“If they place Green at seven, he won’t even score half of what Russell scores, he is batting at a higher position. I think they should re-acquire Russell,” Kaif accentuated.

Is there a chance for KKR to take back Andre Russell in the mini-auction?

It has been very clearly stated that Andre Russell is no longer attached to the Kolkata Knight Riders. He was let go after being brought for INR 12 crores prior to the mega-auction.

KKR has not only two slots for overseas players but also plenty of money. They can get Andre Russell back, but this time it will be at a cheaper price than before. However, it has been reported that CSK is already in line for the veteran all-rounder before the mini-auction.
