The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have been found out to engage in some backdoor negotiation which resulted for the franchises to release the players like Matheesha Pathirana and Andre Russell from their teams respectively.
The group of players retained by Chennai Super Kings and the Kolkata Knight Riders has been unveiled before the mini-auction. The KKR team has the most money available, then comes CSK.
They have shown the door to some of their most senior and experienced players for the coming season. The Chennai Super Kings unshackled the all-rounder master Ravindra Jadeja, while the KKR team lost their main player and star Andre Russell.
The Kolkata Knight Riders made a surprise move by offloading their star all-rounder in the T-20 format of the game. They cut off their association with the KKR star Andre Russell, who has virtually spent his entire IPL career with the Knights.
The Caribbean wizard has accrued almost 10,000 runs, alongside taking around 500 wickets in the global T20 leagues. Russell was KKR’s MVP in many IPL seasons back in 2015 and 2019, when he was the most valuable player.
The release of Andre Russell from the Kolkata Knight Riders resulted in a huge amount being added to the KKR purse. The player had a retention amount of INR 12 crores. His exit has brought an extraordinary INR 18 crores into the purse since he was a top-category retention in the KKR team.
Behind the scenes talks between CSK-KKR
Chennai Super Kings were already facing the music for having released the all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Jadeja’s 12-year stay with CSK has been marked by ups and downs. Now he has been swapped with the Rajasthan Royals.
On the other hand, CSK let go of Matheesha Pathirana, the pace bowler who was a real asset to the Men in Yellow camp. He developed into a terrific speedster and an original talent with the white ball in the last overs.
A RevSportz journalist – Rohit Juglan – stated that Andre Russell to sever his ties with KKR and shortly after being informed about his trade decided to do so, while CSK had already initiated contact with him through back-door channels, leading to the release of their fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana.
As per Rohit Juglan — Andre Russell chose to quit KKR after finding out the team wanted to trade him. Shortly he was allegedly contacted by CSK through back-door discussions, and releasing Pathirana was a tactical move to hunt for Russell at the auction
What are the different teams likely to show interest in Andre Russell during the mini-auction
The veteran all-rounder from KKR will, for the first time, appear in the mini-auction, as he has been released ahead of the mini-auction. Targeting him will be various franchises that are on a lookout for a powerful all-rounder hitter.
Andre Russell can be a team asset for the Rajasthan Royals, who needed to better finish the innings and this was one of the reasons for them losing last season’s matches. On the other hand, CSK, too, required some power hitting stars in the latter part of the innings.
Lastly, the Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, and Lucknow Super Giants seemed to be the ideal teams to nail the signing of the player. The need for an all-rounder, particularly with a hitting range like that of Russell, appears to be a very persuasive factor for all franchises.
