Indian Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson Fails to Impress for a 4th Time Running
Sanju Samson put in another lacklustre performance in the 4th T20I against New Zealand, sending his wicket back for 24 on Wednesday. He’d got off to a bit of a flyer, but his good start didnt last long – he was out for 24 off just 15 balls to Mitchell Santner. It’s now 4 games in a row that Samson has struggled to make an impact, managing a paltry 40 runs in that time – & given that Ishan Kishan is going great at number 3, you can bet Samson’s place in the T20 World Cup squad is now right up for grabs. Even the great Sunil Gavaskar was left fuming on comentary after Samson got out, saying that a big part of the reason was just a complete lack of footwork. According to Gavaskar – “Samson just seemed to be standing there, making room – no real footwork, no getting across the crease – it was a pretty simple wicket for Santner to take really”
Like I said, hardly a foot was moved out of the blocks, leg stump, & sure enough, stumps were exposed once more – & that left the bowler a very open invitation to take them down. Sounds like exactly what happened to Sanju Samson – for the second time in a row, he got out that way said Gavaskar extra.”
New Zealand ended up defeating India by a 50 run margin in the fourth of their T20 Internationals.
India got the nod to bat first but NZ took that as a cue to put their foot down. Tim Seifert was flying, just 36 balls to get to 62 and some fine back up from Devon Conway who whacked 44 off 23 really firing things off. The first 10 or so overs are where the damage was done in that regard with Seifert & Conway combining for 100 runs in about 8 and 2 tenths overs, got us the New Zealanders off to a great start.
However,India got more into the game over the last 10 overs with Arshdeep & Kuldeepm taking up the charge with each of them picking up 2 wickets. And just as things were about to get going all wrong Daryl Mitchell had the last word coming up with a seriously crucial 39 off just 18 deliveries.
India got off to a pretty similar start with a 65 off just 23 deliveries from Shivam Dube & Dube also left Rinku Singh in his wake, Singh having made 39 off 30. However, they fell just short at 165 in 18 and 4 tenths overs.
It was Mitchell Santner who took the honours as the top bowler with a very tidy 3 for 26 off 4 overs.
