It is still uncertain whether Bangladesh will take part in the T20 World Cup 2026. The event will be hosted in India and is due to start on February 7, with less than a month left before its commencement. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to relocate its T20 World Cup games from India after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) directed the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release the Bangladeshi bowler Mustafizur Rahman from its squad owing to the current political situation between the two nations.
In this conflict between the cricket boards, the cricketers are the ones who end up suffering. One of the three all-rounders, Mahadi Hasan, part of the 15 players for the T20 World Cup giving the best ever one-liner on the ongoing deadlock.
“Uncertainty is a management issue – something for the officials to deal with. The players’ job is simply to play,” Mahedi was quoted as saying by Daily Star.
“Even if you send players to Mars, they will go and play. I don’t think any player has any doubts about that,” he added.
Najmul Hossain Shanto, the captain of the Bangladesh team in the last T20 World Cup but not in the current squad, was not optimistic.
You will see that something or the other happens with us before every World Cup. I can say that such incidents have an impact on the players, as I am a player who has experienced a few World Cups,” he said.
“We pretend that nothing affects us and we are very professional cricketers. But even you all know that we are doing acting. It is not easy.
“In my opinion, the players still try to figure out how to put these things aside and perform for the team. But it would be better if these issues didn’t exist. At the same time, I’d say this situation is beyond our [players’] control.”
From the reports it has been known that the BCB is demanding security guarantees for all the individuals including players, coaches, supporting staff, and officials traveling to India with the World Cup contingent. The ICC has responded by providing a comprehensive security plan and different alternatives but has made it clear that ultimate power is with the BCB.
In its latest communication, the BCB provided links to news articles suggesting that the ICC has denied Bangladesh’s request completely and has also cautioned that not going could mean losing points.
