Jasprit Bumrah has been let go from India’s squad. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said this was to manage his workload. He wasn’t in the starting lineup for the fifth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test against England at The Oval. Bumrah also wasn’t seen with the team when they arrived for the second day of play.
Mr. Jasprit Bumrah has been let go from India’s squad for the fifth Test against England. The final Test is happening at Kennington Oval, London, the BCCI said in a statement Friday.
Before the five-game series in England, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir said Bumrah wouldn’t play in more than three Tests to manage his workload. Bumrah played in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, and then in the third and fourth games at Lord’s and Old Trafford, Manchester.
In those three games, Bumrah took 14 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls. He bowled 119.4 overs, averaging 26, and was India’s top wicket-taker in the series. People thought Bumrah would play in the fifth Test at The Oval, but he wasn’t included in the playing eleven.
“Of course, we want him to play, but we also want to consider his physical state. Based on that, we felt it wasn’t right to include him in the squad. He has bowled a lot. It might not seem like it since he only played three tests and only bowled in one innings in Manchester.
But if you look at how much he’s bowled, it’s a lot of overs. He said before the tour that he would only play three games, so we thought it was the right decision,” said India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate at the end of the first day.
India’s updated squad for the fifth Test: Shubman Gill (C), KL Rahul (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Kuldeep Yadav, Anshul Kamboj, Arshdeep Singh, and N Jagadeesan (WK).
