Former South African drops a cryptic remark regarding Rohit Sharma’s retirement

Rohit Sharma has decided to retire from Test cricket just before India’s five-match Test series in England this June. The announcement comes amid rumors that he might lose his captaincy. At 37, Rohit’s retirement follows a tough tour in Australia, where he only scored 31 runs over five innings. Former South African player Daryll Cullinan has shared his views, suggesting India won’t miss Rohit much in Test matches.

Rohit wrapped up his Test career with 4,301 runs across 67 matches at an average of over 40, and he won 12 out of 24 Tests as captain. Cullinan believes his retirement was overdue. He noted that Rohit hasn’t been the same player outside of India and mentioned that Rohit seemed hesitant during the recent series in Australia.

Before the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Rohit struggled with his performance during the Test series against New Zealand. His last strong series was against England in early 2024, where he scored over 400 runs in five matches. With Rohit stepping down, India now faces the challenge of finding a new captain and filling the gap he leaves behind. Reports suggest Shubman Gill is in line to take on that role.
