Gautam Gambhir gets a massive warning before the upcoming Champions Trophy and England tour

Antecedents of performances from many veteran Indian cricketers, including the such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Mohamed Siraj, and others have been intensified amid recent spates of the poor performance. While Rohit and Virat are even being pushed to put a full stop to their Test careers, coach Gautam Gambhir’s future does not seem to be sorted. When the Champions Trophy would be India’s next big assignment, there are some who say Gambhir has to step down if the team fails to perform well in ICC events. Anyway, former India batter Aakash Chopra feels that the England Test series will decide the future of coach Gambhir.

At the end of last season, as it took over the team, after Rahul Dravid’s exit, Gambhir was named India’s head coach in his place. With Gambhir nearing the one-year mark in his position, Chopra believes that the BCCI must also evaluate his performance.

“Is what I expect- one more tour to England. I think the BCCI will not say anything to him at least until that time. After that tour to England, it would be one year since he took over. You were supposed to facilitate the transition within one year. After a year, a review can be conducted for him as to how he performed there, which players he recalls, and whether or not the team improved,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel in a video.

If India doesn’t make a good go for the then upcoming Champions Trophy and then the tour to England, Chopra has an opinion that BCCI would then give seriously thought to parting ways with Gautam Gambhir.

“However, that will be enough time to truly evaluate one’s performance; it should be about a year. So, I think it’s not the Champions Trophy but the England series. And that indeed may be a very important test or criterion on the basis of which Gautam Gambhir’s performance would be evaluated. It would not be a bad thing; after all, performances of the batsmen and bowlers are reviewed, so why shouldn’t the coach be reviewed too?” Chopra insisted.
